Fillers

Fillers

A filling is a method of restoring normal function and appearance to a tooth that has been damaged by caries. When your dentist fills you, he first removes the decayed tooth tissue. It cleans the affected area and fills the cavity with filling material. It fills the spaces where bacteria can go with filler. It also tries to prevent the progression of caries by closing the gaps where bacteria can go with a filling. Materials used for filling; gold, porcelain, compositeresin (tooth-colored filling) and amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin, and sometimes zinc).

What type of filling is the best?

The same type of filling may not be suitable for everyone. The correct type of filling for you will be determined by the size of the cavity, your allergies to certain substances, the place where the filling should be done, and the cost.

Considerations for different material types:

  • Gold fillings are made to order in the laboratory. Gold inlays have good tolerance to gingival diseases but are the most expensive choice and are applied in multiple sessions.
  • Amalgam (silver) is corrosion resistant and relatively inexpensive. However, due to their dark color, they are more noticeable than porcelain or other composite restorations and are not suitable for anterior teeth.
  • It looks the same color and natural as composite teeth. It can break and wear out over time. It is not an ideal material for large fillings and can be discolored and stained by tea, coffee and tobacco.
